Carefully study every detail of this 1869 engraving from Harper's Magazine. It shows a machine that is actually a prototype of  Eli Whitney's Cotton Gin that was invented in 1793.

Carefully read the attached  Thomas Jefferson letter , written  in 1820.

Explain how both  Eli Whitney's invention and the Missouri Compromise were causes for the Civil War.
To answer this question you should think how both of these  events helped slavery to grow. You should also identify  those groups that believed slavery to be a great evil. How would these groups react?  How would their actions impact on  pro-slavery people and Southern sectionalism?
