THE MOLLY MAGUIRES

Read the lyrics and listen to the Song. Discuss the mood of the song. Discuss some of the specific lyrics. How does this song fit in to our understanding of the Gilded Age and the American Dream?
Make way for the Molly Maguires
They're drinkers, they're liars but they're men
Make way for the Molly Maguires
You'll never see the likes of them again

Down the mines no sunlight shines
Those pits they're black as hell
In modest style they do their time
It's Paddy's prison cell
And they curse the day they've travelled far
Then drown their tears with a jar

So make way for the Molly Maguires
They're drinkers, they're liars but they're men
Make way for the Molly Maguires
You'll never see the likes of them again

Backs will break and muscles ache
Down there there's no time to dream
Of fields and farms, of womans arms
Just dig that bloody seam
Though they drain their bodies underground
Who'll dare to push them around

So make way for the Molly Maguires
They're drinkers, they're liars but they're men
Make way for the Molly Maguires
You'll never see the likes of them again

So make way for the Molly Maguires
They're drinkers, they're liars but they're men
Make way for the Molly Maguires
You'll never see the likes of them again

Make way for the Molly Maguires
They're drinkers, they're liars but they're men
Make way for the Molly Maguires
You'll never see the likes of them again

Down the mines no sunlight shines
Those pits they're black as hell
In modest style they do their time
It's Paddy's prison cell
And they curse the day they've travelled far
Then drown their tears with a jar

So make way for the Molly Maguires
They're drinkers, they're liars but they're men
Make way for the Molly Maguires
You'll never see the likes of them again

Backs will break and muscles ache
Down there there's no time to dream
Of fields and farms, of womans arms
Just dig that bloody seam
Though they drain their bodies underground
Who'll dare to push them around

So make way for the Molly Maguires
They're drinkers, they're liars but they're men
Make way for the Molly Maguires
You'll never see the likes of them again

So make way for the Molly Maguires
They're drinkers, they're liars but they're men
Make way for the Molly Maguires
You'll never see the likes of them again

  3. This Is A Gloomy Song In Terms Of Molly Maguires. Also It Somehow Connects With The Gilded Age And The American Dream. It Connects Because Molly Maguires Were Treated The Same As When People Were In The Gilded Age Or Even In The American Dream.

  5. The mood of the song describes that they were upset and worked very hard. This song fits our understanding of the American Dream because we have to work for what we want. We cant just expect everything just to be handed to us

  8. I feel like the mood of this song is a better explanation of who the Molly Maguires were and what they did for people. "Make way for the Molly Maguires
    They're drinkers, they're liars but they're men
Make way for the Molly Maguires
You'll never see the likes of them again." These lines explained who they were and you'll never see anyone more courageous as them for a long long time.

  10. the mood of the song is uplifting , you can hear the flute being played with the melody of the mens voices. "Down the mines no sunlight shines
Those pits they're black as hell
In modest style they do their time" it means this is were they spent there hours of the day working hard , they worked hard too make money it can be related to the gilded age because of economic growth , they had to work harder to make money this cant be related to the american dream , because the american dream influenced freedom and the molly maguires are mentioning things that make them look like slaves

  13. "Backs will break and muscles ache Down there there's no time to dream
Of fields and farms", this song to me seems as if that's not what they were expecting when they first arrived into the united states they thought they would be living way better than back at home.

  14. From the song lyrics I can say that they worked in horrible work conditions. And that people think because they are Irish they are drinkers. And also the Molly Maguires worked hard.
